Every afternoon I stand by a second floor window in the Ed Sullivan Theater and take mediocre photos of guests as they enter and leave the Late Show with David Letterman. In the foreground of each shot is a wad of old gum I noticed on the window ledge. There may be better paparazzi photos on the internet, but this is the only place you'll find the juxtaposition of celebrities and hardened gum. Enjoy!
I heard that LS staffers are required (forced) to go out and cheer for arriving celebrities to give the street a more festive and exciting feeling. Is this true?
The cheering for the gum made me think. The gum is going to retire someday or leave for its own series. Though none of us like to think about that, we need to be prepared.
I suggest you explore having each celebrity chew a piece of gum, which would then be stored in a custom humidor. When THE gum makes its inevitable exit, every week a different celebrity ABC gum can take its place.

Karl, the Late Show staffers are required to go outside and cheer for me. If celebrities think the commotion is for them, that's just gravy.
